The English Huber-School of Astrological Counselling

Joyce Hopwell, P.O. Box 118, Knutsford,
Cheshire WA16 8TG, Tel/Fax: 01565-651131

was founded in June 1993 by Pamela Tyler (author of Mercury) and Richard Llewellyn ( the School's first Principal and at that time Membership Secretary of the Astrological Association of Great Britain). The School is fully independent but teaches throughout the English-speaking world in association with Bruno and Louise Huber's Astrologisch-Psychologisches Institut in Zurich.

Following their attendance at a series of seminars given in Switzerland, England and the USA by Bruno and Louise Huber, it became clear to Pam and Richard that there were many English-speaking astrologers who wanted to learn more about the Hubers' psychological approach to chart interpretation. The idea of creating an English Huber School was thus conceived, but it took nearly two years to write the content of the training manuals which formed the original version of the course. In February 1985 the first students were enrolled; twelve years on in 1997, the School has now enrolled over 1,000 students world wide. A register of qualified Astrological Counsellors is available from the School.

The School has a variety of courses to suit both the beginner and the more advanced student of astrology. A choice of three Foundation courses is offered. These are designed to teach a comprehensive understanding of astrology, calculation, chart erection and interpretation. Foundation Course "C" is registered with the Advisory Panel in Astrological Education. There are two Diploma Courses, both teaching an integrated approach to chart interpretation. At this level, students choose to either follow a course teaching the techniques of the Huber's approach to chart interpretation, or one which combines astrological psychology with counselling.

Workshops form an integral part of the School's syllabus, and since 1989 the School has presented "Face to Face", our annual residential Summer School at The Beacon Centre, Exeter. At these workshops, which include a complete module on Psychosynthesis, students are given the opportunity to put into practise the techniques and skills taught in the correspondence material. The emphasis is on learning experientially and on bringing astrology to life. We live and work together as one large "family", sharing a lot of learning and a lot of fun in a supportive and caring atmosphere and environment.

The School has a team of 15 tutors who are resident in the UK, Canada, Norway, South Africa and Israel. Their aim is to support and encourage students as much as possible, and many tutors offer tutorials and workshops in their own local area. Students following the Diploma in Astrological Counselling Course work on their tutor's chart as well their own and that of a close friend, s part of their studies. The School publishes a 20 page Newsletter twice yearly. This contains articles by tutors and students of the School as well as material written by the Hubers and translated from their magazine "Astrolog".

Joyce Hopewell, one of the first enrolled students to gain the Dip. API from Bruno and Louise Huber, was senior tutor for the School for many years, and took over as Principal in 1991 on the retirement of Richard Llewellyn to Principal Emeritus.

Data for inception of the English Huber School: 8th June 1983, London, 12.30 pm.

Revolutionary Results through the link of Astrology and Psychology, based on the concepts of Psychosynthesis and Transpersonal Psychology. Trough the HUBER METHOD, Growth-Psychology and Astrology are united in a clearly defined system.

40 years of systematic research and constant experimentation of results in counselling practice, have resulted in clarification and simplification of techniques and have lead to a number of basic discoveries:

1. Laws of reading the Aspect-Structure as a Whole, showing it to be a basic model of the life purpose, allowing for a new holistic approach to chart reading.
2. More than 30 Aspect-Configurations named and described.
3. Astrological Psychosynthesis personal and spiritual. A holistic concept of man, expansion of Assagioli's Egg into the Amphora-Symbol
4. The function of the Golden mean within every house, showing a "Low-Point" acitivity of planets between the cusps
5. A psychological Age Theory for all ages, and its tool: the Age-Progression Method (Lifeclock in the Horoscope).
6. The Dynamic Qudrant, being a tool for refined analysis of behavioural reaction patterns.
7. The Dynamic Calculation, a new methof of "Energy Inventory" of the planets, allowing for the discrimination of inherited and conditoned character traits.
8. The House Chart: True situation of environmental influence, education, conditioning etc., shows how the person is appearing to the surrounding world.
9. The Moon Node Chart and its Shadow Function. A new dimension in depht-psychological and esoteric councselling.
10.Counselling with three charts: Natal, House and Nodal Chart, overlooking the whole person in its evolutionary process.

Background Information
Bruno and Louise Huber - Founders of the Astrological Psychology Institute API and the Huber-Astrology
Bruno and Louise Huber were married in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953. Prior to that time Bruno had been a student of physics, astronomy, psychology and philosophy and had begun a minor carreer as an entertainer. Bruno began his astrological studies in 1947. At the time of their marriage Louise had already established an astrological office in Stuttgart (Germany). It was evident from the beginning that they had much to share in the field. Since then they have worked as a close team to evolve their approach to Astrology and Psychology.

1953-56: Commercial and Public Relation work in Zurich: study of the history of religions and parapsycholgy, starting basic research into astrology.

1956-58: Psychological supervision and PR-work at the Geneva center of the Arcane School.

1959-62: Training in Psychosynthesis as right-hand assistants to Roberto Assagioli, founder of the "Istituto di Psicosintesi" in Florence, Italy and head of the international "Psychosynthesis Research Foundation". Here a great intensification of the astrological research became possible due to the amount of psychological comparison available. By working with a great number of cases it became obvious that astrology and psychology are the same, and from experiments a clear cut key to translate one into the other was developed. With this clearly defined concept Bruno and Louise moved back to Switzerland.

1964: They opened the "Astrological Psychology Institute" API in Adliswil near Zurich. Their first activities were - besides ongoing research - astrological character-analysis by mail and individual counselling based on the individual chart of the client, thereby deepening their proficiency in astrological interpretation and their counselling skills.

1968: Began public teaching of Astrological Psychology in Zurich. What originally was thought to be a side activity became an amazing success and spread to all-year school in Switzerland and Germany and later all over the world.

1973: API began a three year training program for Counsellors and Therapists. At the end of this training students receive the highly esteemed API-Diploma which gives them a widely (and even semi-officially) recognised professional standard. Up til now (1995) several hundreds of professional astrologers have successfully reached this goal.

1974: API started an own Publishing Company. The Hubers have authored several books which are well kown in Europe and the Americas. Translations into English, French, Spanisch, Portuguese, Norwegian, Italian, Dutch and Russian have been put up ever since.

1978: The Hubers started with lecture tours in the States: Seminars on Astrological Psychosynthesis, participation at the AFA-Convention every two years and since 1986 lecturers at the UAC.

1981: The first issue of the astrological Magazine "Astrolog" (in German) came out; it is wellknown in the German speaking countries, and has readers on all five continents. It is now in its 15th year with more than 2000 subscribers.

1983: Some of the English students achieved the status of "API-Diploma" and meanwhile founded the english Huber-School.

1989: Founding of "API-International", a Professional Association for Astrological Psychology determined by Swiss Civil Law. The Diploma holders and the students in training are members of API-International (600 members 1995).

Astrology World-Congress in Switzerland co-organized by the Hubers: Easter 1981 in Zurich, 1984 in Lucerne/Switzerland, 1987 in Zurich, 1990, 1993 and 1996 in Lucerne. Each of the Congresses were attended by more than 1000 astrologers from all over the world.
